Lego: ¡Los Murciélagos no son Monstruos!

Recientemente, Lego ha publicado un nuevo juego que muestra a los murciélagos como monstruos. Literamente. Heroica, el nombre del juego, como así también el 'mundo' en donde se desarrolla, fue una vez un "lugar pacifico de cultura y bella"-hasta que fue invadida por monstruos.

Es una pena que Lego, líder en fabricación y venta de juguetes para niños, haya elegido perpetuar este mito anticuado, reforzando miedos sin fundamento sobre estos beneficiosos animales. Por siglos, mitos y falta de información han tenido como consecuencia una declinación sobre las poblaciones de murciélagos. Sin murciélagos, los seres humanos estaríamos en serios problemas.


Lego cuenta con una posición única para enseñar a los jóvenes sobre conservación y sobre la necesidad de proteger el medio ambiente. Por favor, tomate un momento para escribirle a Lego y expresar tu decepción ante el mensaje anti-conservacionista que estan envíandole a los niños.

I am concerned … in Lego's Heroica you portray bats as monsters, reinforcing myths that have led to severe declines in bat populations.

Bats are USEFUL, they eat agricultural pests, reducing insect-damage to crops and minimizing the use of pesticides, they disperse seeds in rainforests, and pollinate plants such as bananas, figs, dates…

Yet bat populations are threatened worldwide… by urbanization, habitat loss, declining water supplies, improper mining, hunting and a new disease, the white-nose syndrome which has already killed over 6million bats in the North America.

Fears based on misinformation about bats have always been a major cause of senseless vandalism, such as the killing of 5,000 highly endangered bats by someone who unleashed an AK-47 inside a bat-cave in Lebanon.

Games such as Heroica continue to spread the ignorance and myths about bats.

Ending the spread of false information is the easiest thing we can do to protect bats. As a leader in children's toys, Lego is in a unique position to teach kids about conservation. We urge you to:

-Eliminate the negative message about bats as monsters,
-Update the Heroica site to include the benefits of bats and the need for their conservation,
-Add bat information on or in the product's packaging, and
-Seek professional advice on the true value of bats from the many conservation organizations around the world dedicated to their study and protection (see examples below).
